about

Latitude is the second album from Inlandsis and the groupʼs second release on the French-Australian label Commission
45, following on from a four-track EP Novembre released in February 2013.
The groupʼs previous album Premiers Froids (Arbouse Recordings, 2007) was firmly rooted in melodic electronica and
whilst the hallmarks of that record are still present throughout Latitude, this new album finds the group embracing and
exploring darker sounds and atmospheres.
The songs that comprise Latitude shift between the worlds of dark ambient, IDM, techno and new wave. As the album
unfolds track by track, Latitude offers contrasting perspectives and approaches across these styles and sounds.
In contrast to previous Inlandsis releases, the increased use of organic instruments throughout Latitude, especially
voices (both real and sampled, as can be found on the tracks “Dazibao” and “Capricorne” for example), lend these songs
a new level of texture, complexity and balance.
Latitude was mastered by Noel Summerville (Autechre, Boards of Canada, Plaid, My Bloody Valentine...). The music of
Inlandsis has never sounded as powerful and rounded as it does on Latitude; the low end is more present and the
rhythms sharper.
Whilst the influence of 90s IDM, the Warp label in particular, can be felt across the album, and at times one might catch a
glimpse of the shadows of Kettel, John Carpenter, Air and Depeche Mode, Latitude is first and foremost an intriguing and
highly personal album which rewards over time and repeated listens.
